When dreams take root in fertile soil, amazing things can grow. As I reflect on 2024, I'm filled with gratitude and wonder at how a vision of accessible nature play has blossomed into something far beyond what I initially imagined.
The Journey Begins
This year marked a significant milestone with the launch of Book & Branches Pty Ltd, bringing two passionate initiatives to life:
Bush Kindy Teaching, our mobile nature play programs, and Bush Kindy Learning, focused on professional development and training. But the heart of our story isn't in the business structure – it's in the communities we've touched and the spaces we've transformed.
Across 16 green spaces in Ipswich, Logan, Redlands, and SEQ, we've hosted 138 Bush Kindy sessions, each one free and accessible to all ages and abilities. Rain or shine, these programs have brought families together, creating spaces where play, learning, and community connection flourish naturally.
What Makes Our Approach Different?
At its core, our initiative is built on four fundamental principles:
- Community-driven partnerships that foster strong relationships
- Evidence-based, high-quality play experiences
- Global perspectives adapted for local success
- Deep respect for cultural identity and community empowerment
None of this would be possible without the wisdom and guidance of Aunty Robyn Williams and Aunty Faith Green, who taught me the profound importance of listening to the wind and connecting with Country.
A Year of Milestones
2024 has been filled with remarkable moments:
- Partnering with Logan City Council for signature events including LEAF and the Imagination Festival
- Creating inclusive play spaces for significant community celebrations
- Presenting at the Australian Forest School Association
- Being recognised as a finalist in the Children's Rights Queensland Week Awards
- Experiencing the transformative "Gunyas to the Bunyas" journey in the Bunya Mountains
Community Partnerships
Our success stems from the incredible support of numerous partners who share our vision. From local councils to educational institutions, community groups to small businesses, each partnership has enriched our programs in unique ways.
Looking Forward: 2025 and Beyond
As we step into 2025, exciting new horizons await. We're expanding our reach through partnerships with Camp Australia and Eagleby South State School, supported by the Queensland Government. New community play initiatives at Daisy Hill Conservation Park and Alexander Clark Park, backed by Logan City Council and Sunnybank Community and Sports Club, will create even more opportunities for nature play.
A special thank you to Kim Wright (KENG)– from one Alice to another in wonderland – for believing in this vision.
The Heart of It All
Most importantly, to every child who has explored with us, every family who has embraced muddy adventures, and every community member who has contributed to our journey – thank you. Your enthusiasm, trust, and active participation make these programs truly special. Here's to another year of discovery, connection, and joy in nature!
